You can safely hook the clip onto component legs, pin headers, etc. without having to worry about it shorting out any neighboring pins. The spring helps prevent poor connections and it keeps the clip firmly connected to the test point. These hook clips come with an easily accessible tab which allows you to solder your preferred wire type onto it.
